Organic Framing - Social media propagation

Hi, Guys! 👋
I am Sivani. I hope you all are fine and well. I am here to give a short peek into my collaboration project on Organic Farming (more specifically ancient organic farming methods). And in order to get a more in-depth view both professionally and personally, I conducted two interviews and a survey. If you guys are interested and curious about organic farming/ancient Indian methods then you can click here and find out:

Survey - Organic Farming

Hi guys,

For the next step of my project, I have decided to conduct a survey.

The main goal of this survey is to find people's thoughts on organic farming, chemical fertilizers and harsh farming techniques. Through this survey I am trying to find out whether people think that organic farming could help us and is it sustainable?

Link to the survey, please send it to all your friends and colleagues!

Interview with expert

Here goes the interview with the head of the research department of the agriculture collage Trivandrum.

  1. Which crop do you think is most subjected to toxicants and why?

The major crops of Kerala are paddy, banana, coconut, tubers like yams. Rice is cultivated as 2 or 3 cycles per year which leads to the deterioration of essential nutrients in the soil, hence becomes impossible to cultivate without using additional supplements.More...

Water supply and climate change in agriculture-Interview questions and answers

Step 3 — Experience

30th November 2019 at 10 am

We interviewed with a regional farmer from India about agriculture. To specify this he is from the region of kalliyoor. Enclosed you can see the interview questions and answers:

  1. Which cereal do you plant?
We plant runner beans. (It is a climber)
  2. How big is your plantation?
    Our plantation is 1.2 acres.
  3. Where does the water come from for the plantation?
The water comes from a nearby lake which is sufficient for watering the plantation.
  4. How does climate change affect agriculture?
Weather extremes are becoming more common, the problem of over raining is leading to a major set back in the yield.
  5. In your opinion, how does climate affect food security?
when climate affect agriculture it in turns affect food security in many ways
  6. What are the biggest problems with water?
overflow of water from the nearby canal and over raining flooding our fields are our major problems related to water.
  7. What was the biggest problem you had in terms of climate and how did you solve it?
In my memory, I never had any that big problem due to climate.
  8. Is there a way to save water in agriculture? If yes how?
The best way is to purpose watering with drip irrigation and avoid spraying water into the air.
  9. Is it difficult to get the water needed to water the plantation?
No, we don't have any problem getting the water required for watering the plant. the pond and the vellayani lake nearby is providing me with enough water to irrigate my field.

Thanks for all your cooperation.

with kind regards,

Organic Farming

" A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.”

- Franklin D. Roosevelt

In my initial post ,  i had introduced my idea which includes looking into the agricultural methods used by the farmers in my country currently. By this we will have an idea on whether the farming methods used are harmful or not and while researching for this I had found many articles on the net :-

These are just some of the many articles present out there which More...

climate impact on agriculture and food security - step 1

step 1 - Imagination

In our project on water consumption and on how climate affects agriculture and food security, we are planning an interview with the head of a research team in agriculture.

we will be seeking answers for the following questions

  • Do you think the climate affect agriculture?
  • Which is the crop you think the most affected by climatic change in Kerala?
  • how do you think we can conserve water in the agriculture fields?
  • does global warming affect agriculture?
  • do you think the nutritional value of the crop cultivated gets affected by the climate?
  • does agriculture play a role in maintaining the stability of climate?
  • do you think the overuse of water or pollution of water affects climate & how?

thank you for all your attention!

kind regards from Switzerland and India

The Chocolate Production in Kerala

        The Chocolate Production in Kerala

Everyone like chocolate, it is a usually sweet, brown food prepared from its main ingredient roastedand ground cacao seeds along with sugar, cocoa butter etc.

In Kerala, cocoa is cultivated about 15, 894 hectares in 2016-17. The crop is now cultivated in an area of 10708 ha with an annual production of 6100 tonnes and productivityof 685 kg/ha.

Cocoa is a tropical crop grown under equitable climate with well distributed rainfall. In majority of the regions, where cocoa is cultivated, a high but often unevenly distributed annual rainfall occurs, resulting in fairly well defined dry and wet seasons. These seasonal changes exert marked effects on the growth of cocoa tree, and on its cycle of flushing , flowering , and fruiting. Shade studies on cocoa indicated  progressive increase in yield       ( with the use of chemical fertilizers ) and progressive decrease in vegetative growth with decreasing levels of shade (Nair et al.,1996).

From this its clear that change in climatic conditions in Kerala effects the growth of cocoa which is  one of the main ingredient for the preparation of THE CHOCOLATE.

Looking forward to your comments ,

Thank you

CONTRIBUTION OF FOOD IN GLOBAL WARMING

Hi Friends,

We all love food and some of us in fact are the biggest foodies in the world. But while relish its taste did we ever wonder if these foods contribute to the global warming.

I am sure the answer is a no. But its true. some of the food that we eat daily like meat ,pork etc can contribute to the major problem that the world is currently facing.

Sounds interesting, isnt it?I feel this as an interesting topic and something to research further.

If anyone is interested in joining our project, please let us know in the comment box.We are looking forward for your comments so that we can collaborate and get to know more of it.

The Agricultural crisis

Agriculture is a major part as it provides the much-needed food products and other materials. But our current agricultural trend is doing nothing but harm the environment, reduce the nutritional value of the plant and deteriorate the natural fertility of the soil. The first part of the project will contain the causes for the crisis such as:

  • Excessive use of chemical fertilizers
  • Over irrigation
  • Destroying large areas of forest land to convert into agricultural area
  • Deteriorates the natural fertility of the soil
  • Reduces the nutritional value of the crop
  • Harmful effects of the use of fertilizers

The second part will contain ways in which we can reduce some of these problems, such as:

  • Educating the farmers on a better and rational way of using fertilizers
  • Organic farming

Organic farming would the main part. While researching on organic farming, I found that there were many old farming techniques which are way cheaper to make and also doesn’t harm the environment. Thus, I found that our ancestors have left us many such methods. Some of the methods that were used back then in India are:

  • Jiwamritha
  • Bijamritha
  • Agnisastra

Feel free to check the video out to get more idea about this project.

I would love to know about any such organic farming techniques that your country may have. And I would also love to hear your opinions on my idea so feel free to comment what you think.

With Regards,

Sivani

What we eat, is it really edible.

We would like to put forward our view on the increasing usage of fertilizers and pesticides in crops and their impact on biosphere.

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of united nations has issued a sobering forecast that world food production needs to be increased by 70% inorder to keep pace with the demand of growing population. In order to keep up with the race we have increased the amount of fertilizers and pesticides to increase the produce. But taking into consideration the consequences we are facing like direct poisoning, high risks  of cancer, deteriorating climate ita high time we look into this matter seriosly.

The long term fertilizer and pesticide application disturb the biochemical process of nutrient cycling. 98%of sprayed insecticides and 95%of herbicides reach destinations otger than the target species. They are carried to aquatic environments ans cause damage to aquatic life. These toxicants get into the food cycle and we consume these toxic subatances. They also contami ate the atmosphere. What we do not realize or tend not to  is the fact that we are  the ones who face the consequences.

Alternatives:Use of pesticides and fertilizres tgat can be degraded and assimilated by microorganisms that is organic matter.

Using the appropriate amount of fertilizers after proper analysis in laboratories.
