book sharing on Instagram

Hello everyone,

besides the website and the tree library we found another useful way to share books. A high school graduate has created an Instagram account where books are sold at a fair price and are even partly new. The goal of this account is to recycle for the sake of the environment. The target group are high school students (Gymnasium, BMS, FMS, etc.) We looked at this account and realized that we could have benefited from it. Many books and readings that we had to buy for the school are sold here cheaper and used. We are a bit disappointed that we didn't discover this site earlier...But now we can advertise a bit and hope other students can benefit from it. Just search for "simplebooksclub" on Instagram. If you find a book you need, you can contact the admin (direct message or comment). Hopefully we can try it soon.

Have fun and best regards,

book sharing - step 3 (experience)

Hello together,

we actually had a good start. When the lockdown followed and we weren't sure for a long time what would happen with our graduation, communication and teamwork became more difficult. About a month ago we found out that there were no final exams. For this reason we were able to devote ourselves to this project without any stress. During the past weeks we learned how much energy it takes to produce an iPad and a book, that there is a tree library in Hinwil and what other possibilities there are to share the books. We will publish the report soon. But we can say that it was still an instructive and interesting time, although it was not easy either.

The comparison between a book and an iPad - step 4 Shape and Create

Hello everbody,

we asked ourselves whether a book or an iPad (eBook) is actually more environmentally friendly. We have created a small chart to compare this.

An iPad needs about 15 KG of minerals to produce while a book needs 0.3 KG. A book also needs a large amount of sand and gravel and 9 litres of water. For the battery and circuit board of the iPad 300 litres of water are needed. As far as energy is concerned, the iPad needs more, namely 100 kilowatt hours and the book only 2 kilowatt hours. Also the CO2 emission of the iPad is higher (33 KG). With the book the emission is 100 times smaller!

If transport and the entire period of use of the book is involved, the iPad can show its advantages. A book can be read for 2-3 weeks and an iPad can be owned for longer. If you order a book from Amazon, it causes environmental pollution that is about half as big as the pollution that was used to produce the book. Emissions for buying a book in the online shop are close to zero. If you take into account the listed raw materials, i.e. water, energy and minerals, an iPad is worthwhile from 40 to 50 books read. If you take an average of one book read per month, it takes a whole 4 years until the iPad is ecologically profitable (the older the iPad is, the longer the time span).

We hope we can find more interesting information.

This is the source we used.

Do you prefer a book or an iPad to read?

Thanks and best regards,

Maria & Deniz

Step 1 imagination - book sharing

Hello everyone,

We decided to change our topic. The new topic is "book sharing". The focus will be on textbooks.

  • Can we share or exchange textbooks between generations?
  • Would there also be disadvantages?
  • What other books can we share?
  • Will there be no more books at some point?
  • Could e-books then also be shared?

These are the main questions that Maria and I would like to answer and thus start our research.

We are looking forward to the results!

Best regards,

Maria and Deniz

Project idea: geothermal energy

I thought that the topic geothermal energy is interesting and I don't know much about it. I did some research and found out the following:

  • 99% of the earth is hotter than 1'000 degrees
  • Under our feet is a huge and always available energy potential
  • Geothermal energy can be used to heat buildings and to generate electricity
  • Iceland is a role model: wants to make itself independent of fossil fuels in its energy supply
  • Geological situatioin with its many volcanoes is a prerequisite for the use of geothermal energy in Iceland
  • Could also be used in Central Europe: Potential is available

Questions for which I would like to have answers would be the following:

  • Where does geothermal energy come from?
  • Where does it go?
  • What is the big advantage over gas or oil?
  • Are there any disadvantages?

Best regards,

Deniz

our goals for today - 13th of December 2019

Hello everyone,

At home we asked our family about our topic "impact on food by climate". Today we will analyse the answers and write them down and also find out what the biggest difference is between the older and the younger generation (parents and siblings).

It would be advantageous if we could prepare everything for the post on dontwastemy.energy.

Humans – Destroyers of Earth

Climate change… A subject that concerns every human being on earth. Everyone also knows what the causes of climate change are:

  • Use of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas)
  • Deforestation of rainforests
  • Stockbreeding

The most common greenhouse gas produced by human activities is CO2, More...
