Research

The second and one of the most important steps is research. We already informed us at the beginning of the project about bio packaging. I worked 5 years for the company Wipf AG, so I visited them and organised already some material. Now we have a data sheet and a documentation from the bio packaging foil with all the information about the raw material and production. We also got a sample of the bio packaging foil which can be used in different ways.

The following step was the reasearch in the internet. We found some different sources and saved them on the OneNote. Yesterday Sharon and I met to prepare the questions for our interview.

The next step will be to summarize the collected information to be well prepared for our interview with a specialist of the packaging department from Wipf AG.

We're looking forward to gain some new experiences.

KoBo Toolbox – my experience

We had the task to track every meal, make a photo and load it up into the «KoBo Toolbox».

It is a very interesting exercise and it is astonishing, what we eat the whole day if we just think about all the ingredients. It isn’t just the food we have to think about, it is also the whole process, from harvesting to packaging and transporting it to us.

For me this KoBo Toolbox was quite challenging because i forgot to take pictures and write a short report very often. Usually right after having a meal or in the evening when I got to bed it came up to my mind: the toolbox. I asked myself why is it so hard to remember this little thing and I just had one answer; habits. It takes a long time until new actions turn into habits so it is totally normal to forget these things if there is no routine at all. If you would like to know more about routine and habits, take a look at the article here or the study here.

Food plant - Hemp

We had the task to do a research about a plant which we use to eat. We decided to do a search of a plant which is known mostly as a drug.

Although this plant can be used for about 60'000 different things rarely one knows; one can use it for cooking as a superfood. It isn't just a drug, it is also used in the pharma and textile industry and we find the plant hemp in form of seeds, oil and flour. Hemp is a very healthy plant because it contains a lot of vitamins and mineral nutrients, much protein and a lot of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

The parts of the plants which are used for cooking are the seeds. Normally, the blossoms aren't used for cooking.

My experience with the food app on KoBo Toolbox

Hello everyone!

I would like to share with you my experience with the food app on KoBo Toolbox.

Our exercise is to register every food we eat during the day for one week in this food app.

On my view, the food app is very easy to understand and it is also clearly arranged.

To register every food I eat during the day is for me a little bit time-consuming. It is difficult, because I do not have much time beside work, school, music, and my horse.

However, even if it is time-consuming, I think it will be very interesting to evaluate the data we registered. I also think, we will have a good base for our projects and because of that, I will try to register as much as I can.

Energycalculation from my workout and my food / Homework 18.09.19

For our homework we had the task to calculate energy from kJ to kWh.

Since a few years I am very interested in sports but also nutrition. For me it is very important to keep myself fit and nourish my body with the food that it needs.

Therefore, I’ve decided to calculate the energy which I burn during my workout and the food that I eat afterwards.

On Monday evening I went to my CrossFit lesson which’s load time was 30 minutes - total endurance 1 hour. My Garmin watch counted a total consumption of 320 calories during the workout.

Afterwards, I ate broccoli, spatzli and smoked tofu for dinner. The dish had a total calories of 380.

To calculate the calories of my food I use the app myfitnesspal and to convert the calories to KJ and kWh I’ve used this website.

I burned:

320 kilo calories (kcal) - which is 1339.776 kilojoules (kJ) - which is 0.37216 kilowatthours (kWh)

I ate:

380 kilo calories kcal - which is 1590.984 kilojoules (kJ) - which is 0.44194 kilowatthours (kWh)

I’ve decided to make the comparison of food burned and food eaten because I think it’s very interesting to see, how much energy we need during a workout in relation to the food that we eat.

If you want to learn more about energy and food I suggest you this interesting article

Calculation of a meal from kcal to kJ and kWh

Our exercise was to convert the amount of kcal of a daily meal into kJ and kWh.

I decided to calculate the amount of kJ and kWh of a portion "Rice Casimir". Here you can find the recipe,
I used: recipe "Rice Casimir"

Here you can find my calculation:

amount of kcal = 723
0.00116 kWh = 1 kcal  ->  723 * 0.00116= 0.83868 kWh
4.19 kJ = 1 kcal   ->  723 * 4.19 = 3'029.37 kJ

For the calculation I used the following data:

Energieeinheiten

Wärmemenge

Einheit der Wärmemenge = Joule (J = N m), vormals Kalorien (kcal)

1 Joule (J) = 1 Wattsekunde (Ws)
3,6 kJ = 3.600 Joule (J) = 1 Wattstunde (Wh)
3,6 MJ = 3.600.000 Joule (J) = 1 Kilowattstunde (kWh)

Umrechnungstabelle:
1 kWh = 860 kcal = 3.600 kJ (=3,6 MJ)
0,00116 kWh = 1 kcal = 4,19 kJ
0,278 kWh = 239 kcal = 1 MJ

Leistung

Definition: Energie pro Zeiteinheit
Einheiten der Leistung: Watt (W = J/s)

Wärmeeinheiten (WE) = kcal/h

Umrechnungstabelle:
1 kW = 860 kcal/h = 860 WE
1,16 kW = 1 Mcal/h = 1.000 WE

You can find this data on the following website: Energy units

Presentation about wind energy

Electricity production by wind is becoming more and more popular. In the future, wind power should become an important pillar of renewable electricity production, but how does wind energy work?

The wind sets the individual rotor blades on the wind turbines in a rotary motion. This drives a generator that produces electricity. Physically speaking, the kinetic energy of the air flow is converted into electrical energy.

This was one question, we reaserched and answered with our presentation about wind energy. Our exercise was to give our classmates some more information about wind energy.

If you are intersted to get further information about wind energy please take a look at our presentation.
