Carambola, or star fruit, is a fruit of Averrhoa carambola a species of trees native to Indonesia, the Philippines, and throughout Malaysia.
It’s usually found in Southeast Asia and other tropical areas including the Caribbean and Latin America.
The name star fruit comes from the star like distinct shape of the fruit when it’s cut in the cross section.
While the unripe ones are green in colour and sour to taste, the ripened ones have a distinctly yellow colour, with slightly brown ribs are sweet.
The fruit is grown throughout India, but especially in the Southern parts and have several nutritional values such as it is rich in antioxidants, potassium, and vitamin C.
Moreover, it’s low in sugar, sodium and acid.
Most pests attacking this crop are fruit flies, fruit moths, ants and birds.
