The waste hierachy

Audio: Introduction to our presentation waste hierarchy (1).m4a (186,99 kb)

The market is flooded with an increasing number of products and gadgets that have to be replaced or are thrown away ever more often – beause they are broken or simply out of fashion.

Europe prodcues around 2.5 billion tonnes of waste a year. Only 40% off of the waste will be reused/ recycled.

The picture above shows the five stages of the waste hierarchy.

The waste hierarchy is a pyramid of options/strategies that helps us minimise waste generation, or manage the waste we create in the best way.

A good waste management scheme for different countries, states and regions should implement or include principles of the waste hierarchy as part of their overall waste strategy.

Keep in mind!

"Next time you are about to buy, use or consume something, bear in mind the waste pyramid and see how it effects your decision making"

What are the five stages of the pyramide?

    Hello Yllza and Sangeetha Smile
It was so interesting to read your post; you gave lots of information about the waste hierarchy and chose an appropriate picture which helps a lot to understand! It was shocking for me that Europe produces 2.5 billion tons of waste every year... I hope people finally understand that this is a serious issue.
Your audio was catchy and I wanted to know more about your topic. I even got your quiz right ;)

    Hi Sangeetha & Yllza

Thank you for addressing this topic! It was shocking to read that only 40% of the waste is actually recycled. I really hope that more people will pay attention to the hierarchy in the future. The vocab really helped to unterstand the technical terms.
I will try to pay more attention from now on when I consume something (:
