HOLY BASIL - THE QUEEN OF HERBS

Tulsi is commonly known as holy basil.

Tulsi (Holy basil) or Vrinda is a sacred plant in Hindu belief and has special place within the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism, Hindus regard it as an earthly manifestation of the goddess Tulsi and is regarded as a great worshipper of the god Vishnu. The offering of its leaves is mandatory in ritualistic worship of Vishnu and his forms like Krishna and Vithoba. in which devotees perform worship involving holy Tulsi plant or leaves.

 Many Hindus have tulsi plants growing in front of their home, often in special pots or a special masonry structure known as Tulsi Vrindavan as this is related to their culture. Traditionally, Tulsi is planted in the center of the central courtyard of Hindu houses.

 Tulsi is an aromatic shrub in the basil family that is thought to have originated in north central India and now grows native throughout the eastern world tropics.

Within Ayurveda, tulsi is known as “The Incomparable One,” “Mother Medicine of Nature” and “The Queen of Herbs”.

 It is native to the Indian subcontinent and widespread as a cultivated plant throughout the Southeast Asian tropics. Tulsi grows wild in tropics and warm regions. Tulsi seeds germinate easily. The seeds are mainly sown in the spring season.The best fertilizer for tulsi plants is a balanced 10-10-10 liquid fertilizer and can be applied every few months for indoor plants.

 Tulsi cultivation in India is practiced on a large scale as this can be grown any where.

It is widely used as a herbal tea,

Tulsi is utilized in the Ayurveda and Siddha systems for treatment of several aliments.

Tulsi has been found to protect organs and tissues against chemical stress and from pesticides, food packaging materials and other toxic industrial chemicals, it has health-promoting properties, tulsi is recommended as a treatment for a range of diseases.

Its roots and stems were also traditionally used to treat mosquito.

 Tulsi is used to purify the environment and to avoid negativity and treated as a sacred plant.

Due to valuable aroma chemicals extracted from the essential oil of tulsi and expectorant, used in treating coughs, bronchitis, skin diseases, and diarrhea.

 It is known for its cooling mellower taste and strong aroma,

It exhibits antifungal activities and contains active chemical substances.

The leaf juice of tulsi along with Triphala is used in Ayurvedic eye drop preparations recommended for glucoma, cataract, chronic conjunctivitis and other painful eye diseases. The juice of fresh leaves is also given to patients to treat chronic fever, dysentery, hemorrhage and dyspepsia. A decoction of Tulsi leaves is a popular remedy for cold. Tulsi leaves also check vomiting and has been as anthelmintic, a prophylactic against malaria, fresh Tulsi leaves are taken with black pepper in the morning.

 Seeds are used as Essential oil.

Leaves are rich in Mineral  Contents8 Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium, Phosphours, Chromium,Copper,Zink,Iron.

Whole Plant is used in Alcoholic Extract, Aesculectin, Aesculin, Apgenin, Caffiec acid, Chlorgenic Acid, Circineol, Gallic Acid, Galuteolin, Isorientin, Isovitexin, Luteolin, Molludistin, Orientin, Procatechuic acid, Stigmsterol, Urosolic acid, Vallinin, Viceni, Vitexin, Vllinin acid.

 There fore Tulsi is truly known as "the elixir of life".
