WOOD as a source of energy

The energy carrier wood is a renewable energy source. The wood for producing energy can be taken from the waste of carpenter works or trees that have disease or fall down from storms. How can you win energy from wood? The wood sticks or pallets that are burned, generate heath and this is were the energy comes from. Also something that is associated with wood a lot is charcoal. Charcoal is a solid fuel and is produced when air-dry wood is heated to 275 ° C without air and without oxygen. Charcoal is made by heating wood with the exclusion of air. In 2018, 141'000 tons of charcoal were used.

Advantage:
Wood is a renewable energy source. With proper use, the growth of forests covers the need for firewood. This means that future generations can have the same resources as we do today.

Disadvantage: There must be enough space to store the wood. Sticks and loose wood chips in particular need a lot of space.

Interesting Examples

Wood energy can be used for many things. Here we have two common examples for you:
1. Wood energy is most commonly used to heat houses, flats or apartments. This is also an example that many are familiar with and for which wood energy is known.
2. Wood energy can also be used for electricity. How does this work? Wood can be burned in a boiler to heat water and produce steam. The steam can be used to power machines. Using steam to rotate turbines generates electricity

    Hey girls

I didnt know that wood is a renewable energy source. Its because they emmit Co2, so I was very confused. With your post you helped me getting a right idea of this resource.

    Thank you very much

    Hello Nicole and Zeynep

Very interesting post! You were able to explain the energy carrier in a short but precise way. I also found the examples quite thrilling. Even though I knew that a lot of heatings function with wood, it was new to me that wood can also be used to generate electricity. Now I even learned that the wood gets burnt in a boiler which heats the water and that the resulting steam generates electricity. Overall you explained the topic very well and used good vocabulary words. For example I didn't know what a wood chip is before.

    Thank you!
