“Between 0 and 15 km above sea level, there are 1400 billion tons of carbon dioxide around the world”, this statement can be heard in the documentary «Humans – Destroyers of Earth».
Carbon dioxide, also called CO2, is one of the many reasons that has brought changes to the earth.
CO2 is heard over and over again but what is it and why does that gas make the earth heat up?
Carbon dioxide is a colorless and greenhouse gas. The chemical formula is CO2. Carbon dioxide consists of a carbon atom and two oxygen (Sauerstoff) atoms.
The greenhouse effect is actually a good thing, otherwise the earth would turn into an ice desert. But humans have ensured that over time too much carbon dioxide has been released into the atmosphere.
This creates the greenhouse effect: On the day the sun shines through the atmosphere, the earth’s surface warms up. When at night the earth’s surface cools down the released heat goes back into the air. However there are too many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and these gases save the heat. That’s what keeps our earth warm – global warming.
The carbon dioxide comes mainly from burning various fossil fuels for power generation and transport use.
For this reason, the earth is getting warmer and warmer.
