Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is the heat coming from the earth and is located under the surface of it. The heat is more extrem the further you go into the earth. Several Miles into the earth you can find the magma rocks, which are extremly hot. However you can already find some heat from shallow ground.

These temperatures can be used to generate electricity in order to heat buildings in the winter. Thanks to a heat pump system, which takes the constant temperature from the earth, we are able to do so. In the summer we can transfer the heat from the buildings into the ground.

Examples:

1. With the geothermal energy and the heat pump you can heat your house in an easy and ecological way.

2. Active Volcanos, Geysers and hot springs are examples of this energy and can be found in the nature.

The Situation in Switzerland

As you can see in the graph, the geothermal energy is increasing each year since 2008. The geothermal probe is by far the most common item to gain energy.

Quiz Question:

At what time of the year could we use the system of geothermal energy?

- summer

- winter

- summer and winter

Vocabulary:

Geothermal energy - Erdwärme

heat pump - Wärmepumpe

 geothermal probe - Erdwärmesonde

Thank you very much for your informative post. I think geothermal energy is a very important and free source of energy. It is an renewable energy source which is always usable, as long as our world exists. Also for the heating of buildings it is an necessary and very favorable instrument because there is nothing which would damage our ecology. We also heat our building with geothermal energy. It is a never ending cycle of heating water with the help of our earth.
According to your quiz question i think C is the right solution, summer and winter.

    Hi Matteo and Alex
Thank you for your very informative post. I really liked your Explanation and the Picture, it describes the Geothermal Energy even more. I think Geothermal Energy is the future and is going to be used or installed(or should be) even more. For your question I think answer C is right.
    Thanks
    Nina

    Hey Matteo and Alex

First of all, very interesting post about geothermal energy. I like the picture and explanation in your post. But I am wondering how sustainable this energy source is. And if it is going to be the leading energy source in a couple years. Does global warming affect this energy source  positive or negative? These are the facts that i am missing in your post. But in overall, your post is well structured with good content

    Thanks

    Devin
