Team Energy Sharing, results from the 27.03.2020, calculations

Hello Together

Here can you find our results and calculations from the 27.03.2020:

Results Game-Sharing

Hello Everyone

Last week, we forgot to show you our results of our gamesharing tasks. We want to apologise for that

We thought of a way of how people can share games efficiently. We found out, that there are two options (if you have more, feel free to inspire us in the comments!)

Option 1 : Sharing function on the PS4. The PS4 is the most popular console in this world and luckily, it has some sort of sharing functions, where two players can share all of their games together. It works like that. Every player has an own account and own console. Now, the two player need to log in to the other players console and mark their PS4 as their own PS4.  Like that, the original owner, can download all the games the other player bought. It is some sort of tricking around the system. The problem with this method is, that you can only share downloaded games and not the ones bought on a cd. But that's why we thought of a different method.

Option 2 : Share the Gaming CD's. First of all we thought of sharing the whole console. But not all of us live together with their gaming partner and that's why this method would have taken away a lot of fun. In addition to that, the gamers wouldn't be able to play at the same time.

So, we thought about of buying and sharing games together. This method would save a massive amount of CD's and a lot of energy would be spared. The only disadvantage would be, that the gamers cannot play the same games at the same time. But if they're anyway only storygame-players, this wouldn't cause any problems.

Either way, both methods would save a lot of energy, as downloading games and burning CD's uses a huge amount of energy.

So what did we do? We tried out the sharing function on the PS4 and started to play together. To be honest, we where very impressed and overwhelmed. We gave each other our log-in informations and started to play games TOGETHER, while only one of us bought the games. It didn't have any disadvantages, as we both only buy games online and not per CD. The only thing you need here is trust, because you give away each other your informations.

Then we asked some friends of ours, if they use this function too. And, impressingly, they don't. A lot of us don't even know about this function. So we started to inspire our friends to use this function while saving money, energy and downloads.

Today, we want to send out a survey to all the gamers we know. Stay tuned!

Best regards,

Rezon and Deia

Sharing clothes - research on the internet (in progress)

Hello everybody

Our team did some research on the internet this week.

In a first step we searched for "clothes to rent" and found out that some special clothes like high quality wedding dresses and suits are already for rent in some online shops.

Until now we haven't found any online shops that "share clothes". We understand that it is difficult to share clothes because of the following;

- The bodysize must be the same or else the clothes will get ugly with the time

- An uncarful person may cause damage to your clothes

- You need the clothes while it's rented to another person

We did some further resarch on how much clothes is getting wasted every year.

As an example of this we found out that every year 20 percent of the newly produced clothes are destroyed unworn by companies like Zalando. We thougt about an idea to reduce this waste by sharing those clothes. You can offer them to homeless people in the winter but also to regular people to wear it for a short amount of time and then give/share it with another person. This concept is the base of our app that we want to create. By bringing those unworn clothes in the market homeless poeple don't need to buy clothes. People who just want to wear another style can also profit off it by wearing it for a certain amount of time and then give/share it with another person.

Then we went on to the Task Miss Suter gave us. The question was to determine how much energy can be saved when 10 poeple would do it/wouldn't do it.

Best regards

Oscar, David und Joel

Energy source "wind"

Wind turbine

Produced energy from wind is renewable. The main part of producing energy out of wind is the wind turbine. In Swiss we got over 57 of them. But how do they produce energy out of wind? It’s simple. The turbines have three rotor blades which rotate when there is enough wind blow. By rotating, they start an engine which produces energy and uploads the energy into the power line. It is important for the wind farm to be able to store electricity so that it can also be used when the wind turbines are at a standstill - for example during maintenance work or difficult weather conditions in alpine winter. For space reasons, it will likely result in battery storage - six stores the size of shipping containers. Each storage facility must be able to store the daily production of electricity from a wind turbine.[Wind turbine, 2010] [How to save wind energy, 2017]

Picture: Wind turbine

Another type of mechanism with windpower is the windmill. In the middle age the farmer used the windmill to produce flour out of wheat.

Wind turbine in Switzerland:

In Switzerland there are not so mandy windturbine, thats because siwtzerland is not a typical country for them. But in the canton of jura and in some mountains there are windtrubine. Switzerland has not so much space for those big windturbine, but in this case there are some ‘parks’ weher it has some windtubine that are enough. They are mostly build in industriezone.  [WWF_Wind energy_2017]

Change of Windturbine over Decades:

Between 1978 and 2010, the wind speed declined by an approximate 0.3 kilometers per hour per decade. From 2010 to 2017, however, the wind speed rose by 0.9 kilometers per hour. According to the survey, the electricity that could be selected from a conventional system using the wind has increased by a circular 17% since 2010. In addition, the increase was 22% in North America and Europe, and within 11% in Asia. So from year to year there are not more windturbine in switzerland, only when they find some free space they can build some even if the wind speed increases. [The expansion of wind energy in Switzerland_2017]

Here you find an interesting Video regarding the building of wind turbines.

Question: Wherecan you find the windmill?

Solar Thermal Energy

Solar thermal energy is the utilization of energy obtained from shortwave solar irradiance, transferred to a heat carrier medium. It also offers large-scale possibilities, such as high-temperature hot water for steam production and power generation. Interesting applications for urban energy planning include installations at building level or a possible connection with district heating networks.

Tidals of energy

What is Tidal Energy?

Tidal Energy is a renewable energy source. It is produced with the ocean waters surge in and out with tides. For most tidal energy generators, turbines are placed in tidal streams. A tidal stream is a fast-flowing body of water created by tides. A turbine is a machine that takes energy from a flow of fluid. The tidal energy is much more powerful than wind energy, because of their different density. Unlike wind, tides are predictable and stable.

knowledge deepening
I haven't found much informations for the real use of tidal energy, thats because it is not very much used. In switzerland you can't find tidal energy systems because we don't have a sea and its tides. The next tidal power station is found in france on the estuary of the rance river. Tidal energy has grown worldwide in the last few years because of companies, which invested in tidal energy projects. Researchers see tremendous potential and predict a major growth in the next decade. The tidal market is expected to grow around 10% in the period from 2017-2024. Because it is invented in 2007, there are not much new technical improvements or development. There are just a few obstacles for that energy source. A big problem is the price, you need to have very much capital to build a tidal energy system. Another obstacle is also the dependence on mother nature, you need a suitable site where tidal streams are consistently strong.

Examples:

1. In the United States, there are legal concerns about underwater land ownership and environmental impact. Investors are not enthusiastic about tidal energy because there is not a strong guarantee that it will make money or benefit consumers.

2. There are currently three different ways to get tidal energy: tidal streams, barrages and tidal lagoons.

Quiz Question:

Where was the first tidal energy system constructed?

A - 2010 in America

B - 2005 in Germany

C - 2007 in Ireland

Vocabulary:

surge - sudden, strong movement forward
Tides - water level that has risen as a result of the moon's gravitational pull on the Earth.
density - how big is something, how many molecules does it have

Speedy "gonzales" post: Hydro Energy

Hydropower is power which is gained from the energy of falling or fast-running water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes. Hydropower has been used as a renewable energy source since ancient times. It was used for the irrigation and operation of various mechanical devices, such as gristmills, sawmills, textile mills, trip hammers, dock cranes and domestic lifts.
